Rosetta mission: Philae goes to sleep on comet as batteries run out

Lander rotates into slightly sunnier position but apparently too late to charge batteries and keep systems running.

The Philae lander sitting on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko has run out of power after a successful last-ditch attempt to nudge it into better sunlight apparently came too late to charge its batteries and keep systems up and running.

Rosetta and Philae were ready for their biggest challenge yet: landing on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. As Rosetta bid her lander farewell and sent him to the comet's surface, the whole world looked on, anxious to see what would happen next...

Rosetta status

Rosetta has another three months of science to collect before its historic mission comes to an end. But the mission is not resting on its laurels. It has just broken a new record by flying an orbit 7 kms from the comet’s centre – just 5 kms from the surface – and there are more breathtaking manoeuvres to come.
